Institutional organization and administrative structure

PRESENTATION

The TERMCAT Consortium, the Catalan terminology centre, is responsible for terminology in the Catalan language. It was created in 1985 by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) and the Institut d’Estudis Catalans (Institute of Catalan Studies).

TERMCAT’s mission is to promote the use of Catalan terminology as a main terminology centre within the framework of the promotion of the Catalan language. It ensures the availability of up-to-date terminology across all specialized fields through the creation and dissemination of terminological works, the provision of advisory services, and the standardization of terminological neologisms, with the participation of institutions and experts representing these fields.

TERMCAT is governed by a Sterring Committee composed of representatives of the consortium’s member institutions. Terminological standardization —that is, the establishment of new terminological proposals required for the development of knowledge in the various specialized fields— is carried out by the Supervisory Council, a collegiate body in which the participation of several members of the Institute of Catalan Studies, and is chaired by a member of its Philological Section, ensures that this task is properly aligned with the overall codification of the Catalan language.

TERMCAT also has a well-established international track record and regularly participates in multilingual terminology collaboration networks.
