The current climate crisis requires a profound transformation of the energy model, responsible for almost three quarters of greenhouse gas emissions. In accordance with the Climate Change Law of the Parliament of Catalonia (Law 16/2017) and the National Pact for the Energy Transition of Catalonia, the objective is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. In parallel with this decarbonization process, the change of model also aims to reduce foreign energy dependence and enhance energy sovereignty. For all these reasons, it is necessary to completely transform the energy field, from energy demand to power generation.

In this context, the Diccionari de la transició energètica (‘Dictionary of energy transition’) includes 551 terms that are relevant in the field of energy transition, grouped into five thematic areas: general concepts (energia útil, escenari energètic, model energètic, etc.), with a subarea dedicated to units of measurement (tona equivalent de petroli, watt hora, watt pic, etc.); foundations and principles (autoabastament energètic, generació gestionable, seguretat energètica, etc.); renewable energy sources (biocombustible, energia eòlica marina, energia solar termolelèctrica, hidrogen verd, etc.); strategies (autoconsum, cogeneració, diversificació energètica, rehabilitació energètica, etc.), and technology (biorefineria, bomba de calor, central undimotriu, placa solar, etc.).

Each dictionary entry includes one or more designation in Catalan, equivalents in Spanish, French and English, a definition and, often, explanatory notes that provide more information about the term.

The dictionary has been produced with the support of the Catalan Institute of Energy (ICAEN), attached to the Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition, of the Generalitat de Catalunya, and the Government of Andorra. Specifically, the scientific advice has been provided by several experts from the Catalan Institute of Energy, and the Office of Energy and Climate Change of the Government of Andorra has also made a final assessment of the work.

Some of the terms included in the dictionary did not have an adequate or clearly established Catalan name, and have required additional advice from other experts and a more in-depth study by the Supervisory Council, the body in charge of establishing the Catalan terminology, who has finally approved the Catalan designations for these more complex terminological cases. In this process of terminological standardization there have been approved, for instance, the following terms: matriu energètica and the complementary synonym cistella energètica (for energy mix); energia incorporada (for embedded energy); energia aerotèrmica and the complementary synonym aerotermia; energia de les marees and the complementary synonym energia mareomotriu; electrocombustible (for e-fuel); conversió d’electricitat en gas (for power-to-gas), i recol·lecció d’energia (for, energy harvesting).

Clicking on “Consulta de termes” (‘Term search’), terms can be looked up in three ways: using the alphabetical indexes (there is a different index for each language), using the thematic index, or making simple or advanced searches in the upper space “Text de la consulta” (‘Text search’) in any of the dictionary languages.
