The online dictionary Diccionari de bioètica (‘Dictionary of bioethics’) gathers 789 terms classified thematically in the following areas: general concepts; rights and duties; health care; reproduction; neonatology; end of life; cells, tissues and organs; genetics; research; mental health; public health; technology and artificial intelligence, and ecoethics. Every term includes its designations in Catalan, equivalents in Spanish and English, a definition in Catalan and, in most cases, additional notes to expand the information of the definition.
Bioethics is the plural and interdisciplinary study of the ethical implications involved in the progress of life and health sciences. The terminological basis of bioethics is very diverse, and includes terms from different origins, terms with a large history and evolution, and terms used within unlike perspectives or by different schools of thought. For this reason, it is important to have a dictionary with the terminology used in bioethics which establishes for each term the most widely accepted definition.
Born of an initiative of the Bioethics Committee of Catalonia, this dictionary has been elaborated by TERMCAT, the Centre for Catalan Terminology, and the Ministry of Health. A large number of experts in bioethics have participated in the redaction and revision of all terms.
As the domain of life and health sciences is in continuous development, this dictionary has been designed as a work open to future updates. For this reason, a procedure has been established to describe the mechanism of periodical revision of the online dictionary (see the document Dictionary update).
In fact, two updates have already been made that represent an expansion of the work published in 2019. The main novelties of the first update, carried out in 2023, were the incorporation of a new thematic area dedicated to technology and artificial intelligence, and the addition of around twenty terms from various subject areas (biaix de gènere, cèl·lula mare pluripotent induïda, deshumanització, dol, eutanasiar, etc.); in addition, small modifications were also made to definitions or notes of around fifteen entries. As for the second update, in 2024, it involves the addition of a new thematic area focused on terms from a field of health sciences with important ethical implications, neonatology; among the new additions, for example, we find terms in Catalan such as cirurgia fetal, periviabilitat, mort perinatal, nadó prematur extrem i seguiment neonatal.
Clicking on "Consulta de termes" ('Term search'), terms can be looked up in three ways: using the alphabetical indexes (there is a different index for each language), using the thematic index, or making simple or advanced searches in the upper space "Text de la consulta" ('Text search') in any of the dictionary languages.
