Terminologia de la sequera

As a result of the Mediterranean climate, Catalonia and the rest of the Catalan-speaking territories are particularly vulnerable to drought episodes, which are increasingly frequent, persistent, intense and of greater geographical extent as a result of climate change. In this context, and especially following the drought that began in 2021 in coastal and pre-littoral areas and has progressively intensified and spread over a large part of the territory until reaching a severity never recorded before, TERMCAT has seen the need to group in a single terminological collection several terms, specific to different thematic areas, which are used in specialized and informative texts dedicated to analyze this phenomenon and detail measures to deal with it.

Specifically, la Terminologia de la sequera (‘Drought Terminology’) includes 76 terms classified in the following thematic areas:

• climatology and meteorology;
• hydrology;
• water management: treatment, supply and consumption;
• agriculture and silviculture.

Each terminological entry includes one or more Catalan denominations, equivalents in Spanish, French and English, the definition of the term and, in some cases, explanatory notes.

For the preparation of this terminology, which represents an expansion and homogenization of the terms included in the infographics La sequera. Termes clau (‘Drought. Key terms’), we have had the advice of several experts in the field (see the Work Team section) and the support of the Catalan Water Agency and the Meteorological Service of Catalonia, dependent on the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda of the Government of Catalonia.

Clicking on "Consulta de termes" (‘Term search’), terms can be looked up in three ways: using the alphabetical indexes (there is a different index for each language), using the thematic access or making simple or advanced searches in the upper space "Text de la consulta" (‘Text search’) in any of the dictionary languages.
