Diccionari de bàsquet - Presentación

The Diccionari de bàsquet (‘Basketball Dictionary’) is a work in progress, published in 2023 and expanded in 2024. It is a dictionary prepared by TERMCAT, with the active participation of the Federació Catalana de Basquetbol (‘Catalan Basketball Federation’, which has revised all the terms to ensure the completeness and validity of the information they contain) and the responsibles for basketball transmissions at Catalunya Ràdio (who, in addition to providing advice, have contributed by providing the detection of loanwords used in basketball and proposals for Catalan alternatives).
Adding the first publication in 2023 and the expansion in 2024, the dictionary currently contains 375 terms, relating to the playing court, game actions and strategy, player positions, club representatives and coaches, refereeing and the statistical values analyzed. TERMCAT and the Federació Catalana de Basquetbol are working on it with the expectation of completing it during 2025 with the addition of new terms currently under study and of updating it periodically.
The terms contained in it are taken from various sources, among which stand out the historical TERMCAT Diccionari de basquetbol (published in 1991 on the occasion of the Barcelona Olympics), the basketball area of the Diccionari general de l’esport also from TERMCAT (‘General Dictionary of Sport’, published in 2010 with the collaboration of the Unió de Federacions Esportives de Catalunya and updated annually) and the Vocabulari de basquetbol of the Catalan Federation of Basketball (‘Basketball Vocabulary’, published in 2013, it incorporated an important section dedicated to refereeing).
Each terminological entry contains the preferred denomination in Catalan and the corresponding synonyms, if any: equivalents in Spanish, French, Italian and English; a definition in Catalan and often explanatory notes. It also includes the thematic area or areas each term belongs to.
Clicking on "Consulta de termes" (‘Term search’), terms can be looked up in three ways: using the alphabetical indexes (there is a different index for each language), using the thematic access or making simple or advanced searches in the upper space "Text de la consulta" (‘Text search’) in any of the dictionary languages.
