The Diccionari dels mamífers del món makes available to users 6,793 terms relating to mammal species around the world, and also to some subspecies considered of interest, which are classified in 27 orders and 163 families. The thematic classification follows the systematic order according to the evolutive history of orders and families. The complete taxonomic classification of this class of vertebrates can be consulted in the in the Concept diagram document.
The work is the result of the initiative and initial work of the specialist driving this project, Rafel Cebrian († 2021), and has been produced under the scientific coordination of Àlex Mascarell, of the Barcelona Zoo, and in collaboration with Juli Mauri, biologist specializing in zoology, and other experts of the Natural Sciences Museum of Granollers who have carried out the completion and conceptual review of the Catalan nomenclature, and which are mentioned in the Work team document.
For the preparation of the dictionary, the nomenclature that appears in the book Illustrated Checklist of the Mammals of the World, edited by Connor J. Burgin, Don E. Wilson, Russell A. Mittermeier, Anthony B. Rylands, Thomas E. Lacher & Wes Sechrest, and published by Lynx editions in 2019, has been taken as a starting corpus.
Each terminological entry contains one or more Catalan common names, equivalents in Spanish, French, English and German, and the scientific name of the species. When deemed appropriate, the entries also include notes with more information about the term (on extinct species, on eponyms or toponyms that are part of the specific name of the Catalan denominations of some species, etc.).
Clicking on "Consulta de termes" (‘Term search’), terms can be looked up in three ways: using the alphabetical indexes (there is a different index for each language), using the thematic access or making simple or advanced searches in the upper space "Text de la consulta" (‘Text search’) in any of the dictionary languages.
