Services

We offer various different services to our users, who range from language professionals and experts in specialist fields to members of the public interested in specific terms.

Cercaterm and Queries Service

We offer open access to our TERMCAT term records, which cover a comprehensive range of specialist fields and can be explored online using our Cercaterm search tool. Browse all our TERMCAT dictionaries as well as terminology offered by other centres of expertise.

For further information on our term records' contents, our Queries Service offers free support in response to questions about terminology, be they from specialists, professionals, or organizations from the public or private sector. It also offers guidelines on terminology, methodology and linguistics for use in terminology studies or the standardization of new Catalan language terms. If you are registered, you can contact our Queries Service.

Portals Temàtics-Diccionaris en Línia

Our Portals Temàtics and Diccionaris en Línia provide people working in specialist fields with terminology resources for their sector.

Each Portal Temàtic offers a range of terminology resources relating to a specific field, with contents such as a terminology search tool, articles, comment pieces, guidelines, and links to dictionaries.

Our Diccionaris en Línia include over a hundred dictionaries we have either produced or which have been produced under our guidance. Each covers a different specialist area, and they are categorized by sector.

We offer professionals who boast knowledge in their field the opportunity of joining sector-specific terminology groups. The goal is to help clear up doubts and to make sure that the terminology officially recommended in their field is up-to-date. If you think you might like to join one of these groups, please use our TERMCAT contact form to ask for more details.

Terminology standardization

Within the Catalan domain, TERMCAT holds official responsibility for the standardization of new terms in the vocabularies of specialist fields. This entails work in two key areas:

  • Approving Catalan forms for new terms that emerge in technical, scientific or humanities fields. These may be required because a new concept has no set name, or because the forms being used are linguistically or terminologically inadequate.

  • Setting linguistic and terminological guidelines to assist people working on terminology projects and the development of language for specific purposes in Catalan.

The body in charge of this is TERMCAT's Supervisory Council.

As part of the process of standardizing new terms, we conduct studies to analyse the extent to which terms that have been approved are accepted and used. These studies take place several years after the Supervisory Council has approved the terms, and the usage data obtained help shed light on different factors that may facilitate or complicate terms' general uptake.

If you want to suggest any new terms for us to standardize, please make use of our Dossier de normalització and our guide on how to complete it (Recerca terminològica: El dossier de normalització). If you think that a standardized term should be reconsidered, please let us know using the same dossier.

To see all the terms the Supervisory Council has standardized, visit our Neoloteca. You can also explore them using Cercaterm.

Documentation Service

Our Documentation Service assists institutions, companies, professional associations, language professionals, translators or individuals seeking detailed information about works produced on the terminology of any given specialist field.

Using our Biblioteca en Línia you can consult the bibliographic references and descriptions of any terminological work covering Catalan terms.

The TERMCAT fonds, which includes over 10,000 publications, can also be explored. If you would like to keep up with each month's new entries in the TERMCAT fonds (monographs, journal articles, and contributions to monographs), we offer regular reports on these updates.

We also provide information on the criteria we follow when citing references in TERMCAT bibliographies.

If you would like to contact our Documentation Service or consult the contents of our fonds, please email documentacio@termcat.cat.

If you are interested in purchasing any TERMCAT publications, please visit the Government of Catalonia Bookshop.

Terminology advice for compiling dictionaries

TERMCAT helps organizations (universities, professional associations, public institutions, companies, etc.) and individuals (professionals, researchers, etc.) seeking specialist advice on the creation of terminology products (dictionaries, glossaries, lexicons, thesauruses, etc.).

Depending on the particular nature of each different project, the advice provided can cover terminological revision; research into, decisions on, and standardization (when appropriate) of new terms; help with methodology; the coordination of translator teams; quality assessment; and terminology-related IT support and management.

Dictionaries' authors have the option of self-assessing their work online. Using our TermTest tool they obtain an initial, objective evaluation of their dictionary based on a numerical score. The tool also sheds light on key methodological questions that may help the authors make improvements.

Terminological evaluations of dictionaries and language for special purposes

TERMCAT serves organizations (universities, professional associations, public institutions, companies, etc.) and individuals (professionals, researchers, etc.) seeking evaluations of works they have produced or are producing relating to Catalan terminology or language for special purposes.

These evaluations usually take the form of a report detailing the nature of the work, any shortcomings detected, and recommendations for remedying them.

People working on dictionaries and glossaries may like to try our online self-assessment: TermTest can offer an initial, objective evaluation of a dictionary based on a numerical score. The tool also sheds light on key methodological questions that may help to make improvements.

Dissemination of other term collections

Such information may be shared on their corporate website or used as a means of support for the construction of management platforms (search tools, portals, integrated editing tools, etc.). Terminologia Oberta can also address the needs of language professionals, PhD students or specialists who need terminology corpus samples for their research projects.
